Home Assistant can turn off the lights when motion stops. That's automation. But what happens when your motion sensor triggers at 2:30 AM, and you need something smarter than a binary "lights on / lights off" rule? You need reasoning. You need an LLM.
OpenClaw turns Home Assistant into something it can't be on its own: a smart home that actually thinks. Not just responds to triggers, but weighs context, chains multi-step actions, and reaches across domains your automation YAML will never touch.
According to Home Assistant's State of the Open Home 2025, the platform crossed 2 million active installations last year. It was also the #1 open-source project by contributors on GitHub in 2024. And yet, the built-in Assist voice agent is still limited to simple intent matching. Say "turn on the kitchen light" and it works. Say "when I leave for work, turn off everything except the fridge camera and set the thermostat to eco" and it falls apart.
That's the gap a home assistant LLM fills.
What OpenClaw Actually Enables
Forget the toy demos. Here's what community members are building right now.
One user wired OpenClaw to monitor their email inbox. If an urgent message arrived from their boss after 9 AM while they were still asleep, OpenClaw sent a Telegram alert. No response? It triggered escalating home devices as a wake-up call. That's cross-domain reasoning: email content, time of day, user response state, and smart home actions, all chained together. Home Assistant alone can't do that.
Other use cases people have actually deployed:
Contextual security alerts that check lock states and recent patterns before deciding severity
Departure automations created in plain English: "When I leave, lock up, kill the lights, drop the heat"
EV charging scheduled against time-of-use tariffs and solar production forecasts
Voice-to-agent pipelines via FreePBX phone calls
Two Ways to Set It Up
Path 1: HAOS Add-on. If you run Home Assistant OS, the techartdev add-on installs OpenClaw directly inside Supervisor. It supports amd64, aarch64 (Pi 4/5), and armv7. Everything runs locally on your hardware.
Path 2: External instance via REST API. This is the path for ClawHosters users, Docker-only installs, or anyone who already has OpenClaw running elsewhere. Generate a Long-Lived Access Token in your HA profile, point OpenClaw at your Home Assistant URL, and install the homeassistant-assist skill. The skill routes your natural language through HA's built-in Assist API instead of constructing raw entity calls, which means fewer tokens per command and better reliability.
If your OpenClaw runs remotely (like on ClawHosters), your Home Assistant needs to be reachable from the internet. Two options: Nabu Casa at $6.50/month handles SSL and routing with zero config, or a free Cloudflare Tunnel if you have a domain.
What Leaves Your Network (And What Stays)
This matters. Smart home commands stay local. When you say "turn off the bedroom light," Home Assistant handles the actual device call on your LAN. What leaves your network is the natural language query itself, which travels to whatever cloud LLM you're using (Claude, GPT-4, Gemini).
That's meaningfully more private than Alexa, which records and stores your voice. But it's not zero data leaving your home.
For full privacy, you can run a local model through Ollama. The trade-off is speed: expect 30-90 seconds per complex query on a consumer GPU versus roughly 1.5 seconds with Claude. I think for most people, the cloud LLM latency is fine and the privacy trade-off is reasonable. But it's your call.
Honest Limitations
No point pretending this is perfect.
Cloud LLM responses take 1.2 to 1.5 seconds. For time-sensitive automations (motion-triggered lights), stick with native HA automations.
Entity naming matters. If your devices are named "Light 1" and "Light 2," the LLM will struggle. Descriptive names like "Kitchen Ceiling Light" make a real difference.
The HAOS add-on only works with Home Assistant OS or Supervised mode. If you run Core via Docker, you need the external path.
Prompt injection is a real concern. Don't expose critical devices (locks, garage doors, alarms) without confirmation prompts.
